Qld: Police hold grave concerns for missing taxi driver

BRISBANE, Feb 18 AAP - Police today held grave fears for the safety of a Brisbane taxidriver who sent out a distress call before disappearing.

Police said the 26-year-old driver, named as Jay Singh, set off a low-level distressalarm from his cab at around 9.25pm (AEST) last night.

His car was located in Ford Street, Rochedale South, in Brisbane's southern suburbs,by a local resident who found the motor still running.

Police and emergency services officers searched the area by foot and used helicopter-mountedheat-seeking equipment last night but failed to find the man.

The search was resumed today with police divers checking waterways in a nearby gully.

Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff Sheldon said there were no signs of violence in oraround the car.

"He's picked up a fare at 8.45pm last night in the Highgate Hill area and the car hasbeen found shortly after 10pm basically abandoned with the engine running, lights on,"

he said.

"It's an out of character disappearance that we are quite concerned about.

"We have grave concerns for his health, safety and wellbeing," he said.

The driver is described as being of Indian appearance, 176cm tall, with slim build,dark hair and dark eyes.
