Fed: Downer to visit East Timor

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER will visit East Timor next week to help the new nation
celebrate the anniversary of its independence vote.

And Mr DOWNER says he'll use the visit to express concern about militia activity along
the West Timor border, and the situation of East Timorese refugees in camps within West
Timor.

It will be Mr DOWNER'S first visit to East Timor since the historic vote and subsequent
militia violence, which prompted Australia to spearhead a peacekeeping mission in the
former Indonesian province.

Mr DOWNER says he'll hold talks with the United Nations special representative on East
Timor, SERGIO DE MELLO, and East Timorese leaders including XANANA GUSMAO.

He'll also visit Australian peacekeepers.

Fed: Stolen generation reps positive after meeting Herron

CANBERRA, April 10 AAP - Representatives of Aborigines removed from their families
today expressed hope that the government would reconsider its assertion that past assimilation
policies did not affect a whole generation.

Five representatives of children taken in the Northern Territory met Aboriginal Affairs
Minister John Herron about the issue in Parliament House today.

Spokesman Maurie Ryan Japarte said the group gave Senator Herron some material about
the stolen children and the minister promised to consider the issue.

Senator Herron's comments on the children, in a submission to a Senate inquiry, angered
indigenous leaders and set back hopes of reconciliation.

The submission, put together by Senator Herron's office and the Prime Minister's Department,
said one in 10 Aboriginal children taken from their families under past assimilation policies
did not constitute a generation.

Mr Japarte said the group today found Senator Herron was a decent man with a commitment
to the issue.

But they condemned Prime Minister John Howard and Reconciliation Minister Philip Ruddock,
who refused to meet the delegation.

"I find Senator Herron a decent man, and I find a few other people within who've got
the guts to stand up and say things," Mr Japarte told reporters.

"I'd like to slam dunk the Reconciliation Minister Philip Ruddock for not meeting with
us, and also the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, who has not shown any leadership
at all on anything.

"The reconciliation process is back - way back."

Mr Japarte said the main thing Aborigines wanted was for the government to acknowledge
the truth of history.

"The truth is there were generations of people who were removed in the Northern Territory,"

he said.

"We want our history documented. We are all a part of Australian history."

Victorian Premier JEFF KENNETT has been jeered by AIDS activists after opening a new $9.1
million emergency centre at the Alfred Hospital.

Protesters angered at delays in building a new palliative care unit in inner suburban
Prahran thumped on the glass doors of the new trauma centre where Mr KENNETT made his address.

MARK RILEY from the Victorian AIDS Council says the Alfred committed to building the
Continuing Care Unit for patients three years ago with a grant of $2.4 million.

He's blamed poor planning by the Inner and Eastern Healthcare network for repeated delays,
even though the hospital has bought the land in Prahran.

Health Minister ROB KNOWLES says the unit will be completed by August next year.

Alfred chief executive Dr MICHAEL WALSH says the hospital's new emergency centre will
reduce waiting times while treating the most severe level of illness.

NSW: Helicopter escapee s car found in northern suburb

Police have recovered a blue Mitsubishi Sigma stationwagon believed to have been used in
the getaway of escaped bank robber JOHN KILLICK and his girlfriend LUCY DUDKO.

DUDKO hijacked a helicopter at gunpoint and forced its pilot to pluck KILLICK from the
sports oval at Sydney's Silverwater jail last Thursday.

Police found the car yesterday outside a house in the northern suburb of Roseville, after a
tip-off.

Speculation has been rife that the couple escaped Sydney by boat after making their way to
the northern Sydney suburb of Terrey Hills.

But police say they could simply be lying low.

MELBOURNE, Dec 12 AAP - Security guards had to deal with a lone protester before the
Victorian state ALP conference got underway in Melbourne today.

A woman, carrying a placard saying "John Brumby stand down", refused to leave the front of
the conference room at Monash Universitys Clayton campus.

After climbing on the stage, where party officials were sitting, she was escorted to the
back of the hall by two security guards.

The conference is considering recommendations by Mike Dreyfus, QC, who has put forward a
range of measures to tackle branch stacking and factional in-fighting.

ALP state president Jill Hennessy urged the 400 delegates not to waste time pointing
fingers and making counter accusations - but to debate what type of Labor Party Victorians
deserved.

ALP state secretary John Lenders said more fundraisng was needed if Labor was to be
competitive at the next Victorian state election, which could be called in six months time.

He said that in the 1996 election the Liberal party had 1,192 advertisements on Melbourne
television compared with Labors 78, which was a ratio of 15 to 1.

"We cannot let that happen again," he said.
